Open Source vs. Secret Surveillance: EFF Releases Rayhunter
The Electronic Frontier Foundation has developed an open-source tool called
to detect fake base stations known as Stingrays. These devices disguise themselves as real cell towers to intercept phone data and track users' locations.
🛡 Rayhunter analyzes service traffic between a mobile device and a communication tower without affecting user data. The tool records suspicious events, such as attempts to force a switch to a vulnerable 2G standard or unusual IMSI requests.
Unlike other detection methods, Rayhunter works on an affordable Orbic RC400L 4G router that costs around $20. When suspicious activity is detected, the device's screen turns red, warning the user of a possible attack.
